Call for artists to help bring Oor
Wullie’s Bucket Trail to life
Organisers of Oor Wullie’s Bucket Trail, Tayside’s largest
ever mass participation public art event, are on the hunt for artists to come
up with unique designs for each of the dozens of Oor Wullie sculptures that are
set to descend on Dundee for ten weeks this summer, all to raise money for
Tayside Children’s Hospital.
As the Bucket Trail gathers momentum, over 50 sculptures are
waiting patiently to be individually designed by both local and national
artists, as well as the odd celebrity, and there are still sculptures to be
designed. With the deadline for submissions set for February 19th,
organisers The ARCHIE Foundation, along with partners Wild in Art and DC
Thomson, are appealing for some final artistic Oor Wullie designs to consider.
Each and every submission is considered and no creative idea
is too big or too small, from traditional to new media, fine art to
illustration and graffiti to mosaic. Organisers would like to encourage
professional artists, enthusiastic amateurs, graphic designers, architects and
photographers to submit ideas and seize this unique opportunity to showcase
their work on a grand scale for a great cause.
This one-of-a-kind project for Tayside aims to raise crucial
funds for the ARCHIE Foundation’s Tayside appeal to raise two million pounds to
help create a brand new twin operating surgical suite for the Tayside
Children’s Hospital at Ninewells.
Suzanne Scott, Artist Co-ordinator for Oor Wullie’s Bucket
Trail commented:
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Dundee’s
creative offering to what is set to be a huge audience. Similar events have
generated enormous interest, creating massive footfall and generating
widespread media coverage making this a great platform for any creative
individual. Best of all, the sculptures are set to be auctioned off after the
summer, to raise money for The ARCHIE Foundation, so who knows where your
design will end up!”
Recently recognised as the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design,
Dundee joins cities such as Berlin, Beijing and Buenos Aries for their
contribution to the creative arts. As well as providing an opportunity to
showcase the wealth of creative talent in the area, Oor Wullie’s Bucket Trail
will capture the public’s imagination and create a buzz around the city and
surrounding areas for the 10 weeks the sculptures are on display.
Dundee is the latest city to host the successful Wild in Art
sculpture projects, which have previously seen giant cartoon Gromits in
Bristol, Dolphins in Aberdeen and GoGoGorillas in Norwich.
