Expanded Bridge Beam Capacity for UK Concrete Fabricator

ABM Precast Solutions has completed a substantial investment in their Nottinghamshire casting plant enabling the production of a extended range of much larger, heavier U and W section beams. The new facility is able to manufacture beams of up to 120 tonnes in tension casting beds that are 64 metres long. The new capacity is in addition to the extensive ABM catalogue of standard bridge components and the multiple configurations available within their unique arch and portal frame system that uses geotechnical engineering principles for rapid installation.

The new facility will achieve short cycle times, even for the heaviest and most complex beams, delivering a product of high and consistent quality. In a streamlined process, reinforcements and stressing components are prefabricated off line before they are craned into the moulds and tensioned. Precisely controlled and even heating of the moulds then speeds the strengthening of the concrete to the critical point where tensioning can be released. The temperature controlled environment enables curing to proceed rapidly, permitting beams to attain the strength required for stress load transfer using sequence controlled ‘mass de-tensioning’ hydraulic rams.

Prior to the development, ABM took a close look at some of the leading beam and pre-cast workshops in Europe, taking inspiration and best practice to include in the new facility. Short cycle times and the speed with which the process can be adapted allows the new ABM cast shop to switch production quickly to make different types of beams or other large reinforced structural components.

“The new cast shop gives us the capability to produce the largest bridge beams in the UK or multiples of smaller units. No other pre-cast concrete manufacturer on the UK mainland has this capacity for large and heavy structures with such flexibility and such an extensive product range,” explained business development manager Mike Sanderson.

First castings in the new shop began in June 2015 and the first W section beam was cast in January 2016. With sister companies in Ireland and Europe, ABM has in-depth expertise and access to the most advanced technology for the production of reinforced concrete beams and other structures.
