Working with dad - CNWL's work experience programme in Milton Keynes

Like father, like son?

Dr Simon Edgar, consultant psychiatrist in Milton Keynes Mental Health Services isn't sure, but he was certainly proud to see his eldest son considering following in his footsteps.

Alex, 15, has just completed a week's work experience at the clinic in Westcroft Milton Keynes and in a letter to his dad admitted how much he had enjoyed the placement.

"I managed to grasp what you actually do all day as well as your team. Moreover how you help lost and scared people to find their way again," he said in the letter.

Simon admits: "To be honest, Alex isn't quite sure what he wants to do, but he is drawn to social issues, inequality, Human Rights etc. He is interested in Psychology, sociology and writing/journalism more than Medicine I would say...He wanted to see what it is his dad really does, and I think he got a lot out of the attachment.

"Perhaps my younger son will join me next Summer?"

The work experience programme is offered to those aged 15 who are interested in working in the health sector or for the NHS, though 14 year olds may also be considered depending on the work experience required.

Departments are encouraged to take part as those who take part usually have a genuine interest in health and the NHS.

CNWL also offers an apprenticeship programme for those aged 16 and older, who do not have a degree, have lived in the EU/EEA for three years and are interested in working in the health sector.
