India Independence Day celebrated at Mansion House
The 70thanniversary of India Independence Day was marked with a special celebration at the Mansion House in Cardiff.
The event on Tuesday, August 15th, saw the raising of the Indian flag, singing of the Indian national anthem, the cutting of an anniversary cake, a number of speeches and fantastic bhangra dancing.
The celebration was organised by Raj Aggarwal, Honorary Consul for India in Wales, and was attended by The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, the Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, First Minister Carwyn Jones, politicians and many guests from the Indian community.
Independence Day is observed every year on August 15 as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom.
On August 15, 1947, the UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act 1947 transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
The Lord Mayor said: "I am pleased to have been invited to support our Indian communities by helping them to celebrate this very important day.
"I would like to thank Raj Aggarwal - Honorary Consul of India for Wales - for his commitment to his role and for his invaluable support and assistance. He is a true Ambassador of Wales and India."
He added: "People from India have made a massive contribution to our city, in our economy, in our culture, and in our communities.
"There has been a long successful history of partnership working between the Council and local Indian communities, with community representatives playing an active part in the development of the city.
"These contributions make our city the modern and vibrant Cardiff we all know."
