The British Safety Council’s upcoming push for health in the workplace a smart one, says SP Group

Industrial floor repair and product experts SP Group has responded to the news of the focus for the British Safety Council’s annual conference 2014 this October will be on “Pushing health up the workplace agenda”.

Taking place on the 15th October this year, the event is to be hosted at the America Square Conference Centre in London where the key focus is on occupational health, amongst many other viable points surrounding safety in the workplace. Lynda Armstrong OBE, the Council’s Chair of Trustees is to open the conference with a broad spectrum of discussions, speeches and keynote presentations from several notable individuals, including Battersea Power Station’s director of health and safety, Lawrence Waterman OBE and one of the leading specialists on work related illnesses and diseases, Dr. Lesley Rushton OBE from London’s Imperial College.

With a large number of additional presentations from experts across many fields, the British Safety Council’s aim is to reduce further the number of accidents sustained through both occupational illnesses and accidents occurring within the workplace through better understanding and improved preventative methods; from the use of better protective equipment, increased measures to promote regular maintenance to premises and machinery. In addition, experience is to be shared and discussed that has been gained from introducing health and well-being programmes in workplaces.

In a statement released the other day, the Policy and Communications Director of the British Safety Council, Neal Stone mentioned that due to the ‘enactment of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974’, there have been ‘significant improvements’ over these past forty years in the ‘reduction of fatal and major injuries at work. ‘

Mr Stone went on to add, “This achievement is a tribute to all of those involved in ensuring that the risk of workplace injury is effectively controlled.” Mentioning that measures to control occupational health issues in the workplace had unfortunately not progressed at the same level, the focus then is placed more on raising attention further to the dangers presented across all industries.

SP Group, established since 1990 as a leading provider of floor screeds, floor paints and industrial floor repair products regularly responds to industry relevant topics. Speaking on the company’s behalf, a spokesperson shared their thoughts on the British Safety Council’s conference saying:

“Understanding the hazards and dangers within a specific workplace not only addresses safety in a working environment but where occupational health is concerned, we believe it is equally important to properly address factors that can cause a number of illness-related absences across the entire spectrum of industries operating today, making a safer environment for all.”
