Chapter Care Meets Prime Minister's call for ‘Dementia Friends'

As Prime Minister, David Cameron was announcing the forthcoming launch of a new multi-million pound fund to establish a large-scale, international investment scheme to discover new drugs and treatment that could slow the onset of dementia, carers from family-owned, Barnstaple-based domiciliary care provider, Chapter Care, were completing their Alzheimer's Society Foundation Certificate in Dementia Awareness, and are now qualified as ‘Dementia Friends'.

Recognising the need to help families who are dealing with an elderly relative who has Alzheimer's, the organisation has dedicated itself to provide a specialist service for families in Barnstaple, Bideford and the surrounding areas.

Says Mike Goodman, Business Operations Manager of Chapter Care: "Dementia is such a complex issue and families can struggle to find the kind of care assistance that can alleviate the emotional burden of looking after an elderly relative and give them some respite."

As the team completed their Certificate, the Alzheimer's Course Tutor, Su Burns commented: "It has been a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic and passionate group of carers."

More than £300 million is to be spent by the Government on research into dementia while all NHS staff will have to undergo training in the condition. Outlining new plans to tackle what he described as "one of the greatest challenges of our lifetime", Mr Cameron said that an international dementia institute will be established in England over the next five years in a bid to make the UK a world leader for research and medical trials.

Meanwhile there are plans to give three million more ‘dementia friends' training in how to give support to those around them with the condition.
