Ysgol Pencae, a Welsh-medium primary school in Llandaff, has received glowing praise in its latest inspection report by Estyn.

The inspection notes that the school is a “caring and inclusive community” where pupils thrive in a familial and supportive environment. Inspectors commended the school’s strong leadership and the collaborative efforts of staff in delivering a rich and engaging curriculum.

Key findings include:

• Excellent pupil behaviour and empathy: Almost all pupils feel safe and happy, demonstrating mature and respectful attitudes.

• Strong academic progress: Most pupils make sound progress in literacy, numeracy, digital, and wider skills.

• Inclusive ethos and strategic leadership: The headteacher and deputy headteacher were praised for fostering a homely culture and setting high expectations.

• Creative and cultural enrichment: Pupils benefit from opportunities such as drama workshops, eco-housing projects, and international week celebrations.

• Robust support for additional learning needs: The school provides inclusive and effective support for all learners.

The report also highlights the school’s commitment to Welsh language and culture, with initiatives like the Criw Cŵl Cymraeg and activities promoting diversity and citizenship.

Estyn made one recommendation: to provide more purposeful opportunities for the youngest pupils to develop independent learning skills, particularly in outdoor settings. The school will now address this in its action plan.

We are especially proud that it recognises our happy, empathetic learners who are driven to learn, succeed and reach high standards.

“Our school motto is Ymdrech a Lwydda (effort leads to success) and this report encapsulates this as it is a celebration of the outstanding teamwork between our dedicated staff, exceptional pupils, and supportive families.”

Cardiff’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “The whole Ysgol Pencae community should feel incredibly proud of this report which highlights the dedication of staff and the enthusiasm of pupils.

“In its report, Estyn have reflected that the school is a place where children are nurtured, challenged, and celebrated. Congratulations.”

At the time of inspection, Ysgol Pencae had 207 pupils on roll. 3.9% of pupils were eligible for free school meals, 2% of pupils identified as having additional learning needs and 52.4% of pupils speak Welsh at home.
