Wyckham Blackwell offers new timber frame Haus

West Midlands timber engineering specialist, Wyckham Blackwell, has introduced a new high specification range of timber frame kits for its rapidly expanding timber frame business, WB Timber Innovations Ltd.

Taking inspiration from Wolf Systems, which designs and manufactures the complete Wolf Haus product in Germany and Austria, Wyckham Blackwell recognises the opportunity to meet the needs of a specialised market.

The company, which has a long-standing relationship with Wolf Systems and manufactures Wolf-designed easi-joists and trussed rafters, expanded into timber frame production recently and has seen this business develop substantially. Largely driven by the bespoke self-build market, WB Timber Innovations now has a full order book until well into 2014.

"We've had a lot of enquiries from people who are inspired by projects they've seen on programmes like Grand Designs and are interested in the continental prefabricated systems that are often used", says Wyckham Blackwell director, David Himmons.

"Off-site manufacturing is more advanced in Germany and Scandinavia than in the UK", explains Mr Himmons.

Most UK timber frame systems - such as that produced by Wyckham Blackwell - are factory-insulated, closed-panel systems which are erected on site and then clad and finished in-situ.

However, this new product is delivered to site as fully-finished wall sections, complete with windows and doors, rendered on the outside, dry-lined inside and even with plumbing and electrical services installed.

"It's a different concept and one that definitely has an un-met demand in the UK" says Mr Himmons. "it certainly gives us a second string to our bow".

‘Superb' engineering and energy efficiency capable of Passiv-Haus standards have a strong appeal to UK self-builders, says Mr Himmons. But he also believes that the speed, efficiency and design flexibility of the WB Haus will attract attention from housing associations.

"The system is already attracting some interest from the industry, we hope to be speaking to clients in the months to come".
