TREMCO triumphs at prestige pottery project

Contractors carrying out the £34m redevelopment of Royal Doulton's historic ceramics factory in Stoke-on-Trent have used TREMCO's ES100 Single Coat Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) to restore over 5,000 sq. metres of concrete flooring.
Specialist flooring contractor, Westcotes Flooring Company, was employed by main contractor Thomas Vale to replace the old carpets and vinyl sheet flooring throughout the pottery's main three-storey building.
The extensive re-modelling of the interior (which includes manufacturing areas, offices, showrooms, a shop and café as well as staff canteens and restrooms) involved the removal and relocation of internal walls.
"Our original contract was just for DPM and 3mm latex but due to the condition of the floors, most of our work was deep-fill," explains Adam Conway, Contracts Manager at Westcotes.
Despite the additional work involved, Westcotes stuck to the original timescales and introduced day-and night-working in order to manage the workload effectively. "We had five or six guys on site virtually all the time," says Adam.
To carry out the contract, Westcotes used TREMCO's ES100 Single Coat DPM in combination with CS100 Epoxy Primer, with CS175, a primer for preparing porous substrates, being used to prepare porous surfaces.
Other products used included TREMCO SX302 Latex Underlayment, a moisture-tolerant latex screed, and SX220 Self Levelling Compound.
Work on the floors started in January 2015 and was completed, on time, at the end of August. "We were on-site for seven or eight months and it was full-on the whole time," says Adam.
Despite - or perhaps because of - the challenge, Adam says that the Royal Doulton contract was a rewarding one. "We work on all types of projects ranging from new-builds to refurbishments but due to the timescales and the work involved at Royal Doulton it was very different and a little less predictable," he says.
The job encompassed elements of refurbishment, demolition and new-build and while there were no serious problems encountered, Adam says: "this was a prestige project so the job had to be done right".
"We chose TREMCO because we know the company and the products and had confidence in them. They provide a reliable and trustworthy all-round package."
