January is traditionally the month for turning over a new leaf but, when it comes to healthy eating and trying to lose weight, New Year resolutions often last as long as the Christmas leftovers.

This year, however, Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH) is aiming to help customers, and other members of the communities it serves, to make lasting changes to their lifestyles with a series of free ‘healthy eating' workshops ledby a qualified nutritionist.

Over six weeks, the workshops will cover healthy diets and the importance of exercise, menu planning, reading food labels, the difference between good and bad fats, understanding portion sizes and sugars in food.

The workshop programme will also include a virtual shopping trip and gets underway at the Signpost Centre in Auden Way, Stafford, on Tuesday, January 12.

Alison Poole, SARH Community Involvement Officer, explained: "We know that many people choose the New Year to start making improvements to their lifestyle and improving their diet, but it's very hard sticking with it.

"However, by helping people understand food better, we can assist them in making simple changes that will help them improve their diet and general health and wellbeing.

"There is a lot of confusion out there about different diets, and plenty of myths that need to be dispelled, but with the help of a qualified nutritionist those attending the workshopswill have all the information needed to make the right decisions. This can make a huge difference to many aspects of their life, including losing weight, and by showing them how to plan menus in advance it will save them money too."

The weekly sessions are part of the social landlord's wider Feel Good Food initiative, funded by Stafford and Surrounds Health and Wellbeing Commissioning Prospectus and run in partnership with Stafford Manor High School. They'll last for around an hour and a half and get underway at 10am every Tuesday for six weeks from January 12.

Those taking part can also join monthly cooking sessions at Stafford Manor High School where they can pick up even more practical tips while trying their hand at preparing delicious, healthy food.
