Record year in delivering device intelligence services with online smartphone support tripling to over 100,000 hours saving the telecoms industry $US 17,500,000 in customer care costs; full report www.spirent.com/DI-Review-2015

Crawley, UK, 28 January 2016: The year 2015 proved a record-breaking year for the device intelligence business unit of Spirent Communications plc (LSE: SPT). During the year, the unit helped more than 100 mobile network operators (MNOs) and over 70 mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to deliver new device intelligence services and support to over1.5 million handset subscribers.

Overview 2015:

  • the number of distinct Android devices in use globally passed the 18,000 benchmark in 2015 for the first time. A least 12 different versions of Android were in use

  • 1,200 new devices were tested and certified by Spirent's device intelligence unit. This included devices from eight new handset manufacturers

  • 245 how-to guides were added into Spirent's growing online Device Guides smartphone knowledge base

  • the year also saw increasing numbers of MNOs and MVNOs harnessing the power of device intelligence for better customer engagement and faster on-boarding of new subscribers

  • Spirent's MVNO specialized business Tweakker added 18 new MVNOs to its customer base during the year predominantly from the American and African markets

  • Device management was extended for care centers to offer greater online device support and introduce automated customer engagement

  • Rich and accurate device intelligence was provided to more than 100 operators during the year, specifically verified detection data, tested/certified OTA settings and manual set-up guides, rich capability data, and visual device guides.

  • Over-the-Air (OTA) settings for over 900 different device models were tested, certified and added to the Spirent device library.

  • Italian was added to languages used in the device guide library. The guides are now available in 10 languages

  • Greater device support focus was attributed to the fast-growing African and LATAM markets

  • Devices from eight new device makers were added for the first time (Acer, Asus, Caterpillar, Microsoft, OPPO, SKY, Tecmobile and XOX) and how-to guides for 80 devices were added for new operating systems.

  • More operators began to reduce or eliminate device subsidies, which led to an increase in bring-your-own-device (BYOD) subscriptions in networks and further reduced operators' control over device fleets.

  • How to guides for the first wearable smartwatch was introduced into the Device Guides library

  • The year saw more operators seeing online smartphone support as a business opportunity and economic benefits. With an average customer care call costing mobile operators about USD 7 per call, Spirent's Device Guides helped the telecoms industry to solve over 2.5 million smartphone problems generated by more than 1.5 million users.

  • In 2015, Spirent saved MNOs and MVNOs a record USD 17,500,000 in customer care savings.
