D R Services provides contemporary ladder solution for ancient abbey

Providing access to storage spaces within the choir vestry, a bespoke MWE Vario telescopic library ladder has been supplied and installed by D R Services as part of a £2.87 million development project at Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk.

Wymondham Abbey is 900 years old and the work being carried out is designed to make the abbey more comfortable, convenient and versatile. A new meeting space has been created within the ruins of St Margaret's Chapel and this area is also to be used as a space for items from the archive and a vestry for the choir. The Vario ladder has been installed to serve specially designed and made oak fronted cupboards that have been fitted to three of the walls.  

Thanks to swivelling head technology and rollers, the 2.7m high Vario ladder slides smoothly on a continuous 25mm stainless steel running rail. It is able to move conveniently across the corners along curved sections of the rail to access any of the cupboards on each of the three walls without needing to be lifted off. When not in use the ladder it is stored completely vertically; before it is climbed, the base is simply pulled away and the telescope action allows it to stand at a safe angle. As with the running rail, all the ladder's components are stainless steel including the 30mm diameter stringers and the flat treads.
