Improving air quality at Direct Line

PRESS RELEASE: 30 March 2016

Green Compliance improves air quality at Direct Line

More than 30km of ductwork at Direct Line's commercial offices nationwide are now cleaner and compliant with current approved codes of practice and legislation following a comprehensive air hygiene and system cleaning programme completed by Green Compliance.

Direct Line is one of the UK's leading insurers, with teams working from commercial premises across the UK. All are managed by Carillion Facilities Management and are of varying size, age and design.

Carillion identified a need to review ductwork and associated components across all locations, ensuring that it was clean and delivering high quality air across all locations; that access doors were fitted and fully operational at appropriate intervals; and that it met the Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association standard TR/19 and BS EN 15780:2011.

All air handling unit coils had to be checked and cleaned to ensure optimum operation and fire dampers were checked, cleaned and renewed to meet commercial and public building standard requirements.

Working closely with Carillion, six Green Compliance teams were deployed to assess the ductwork within 17 Direct Line commercial buildings. On completion of the assessment a report showed where work was needed.

Green Compliance then fitted 2,500 new access doors and cleaned the internal surfaces of the ductwork and AHUs, with most works carried out between 8pm and 7am to minimise disruption to Direct Line's operational teams.

In addition, all fire dampers were checked, cleaned and remediated to comply with British Standard 9999:2008 Code of Practice for Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use of Buildings.

All work was completed and reports were produced to prove cleanliness and inform future maintenance programmes. Following the successful completion of the ductwork programme, Carillion Facilities Management has commissioned Green Compliance to carry out an ongoing filter exchange programme across the Direct Line Group estate.
