JUNE 2012: There are many benefits to planting in containers. They are portable, displays can be constantly changed, and temperatures can be controlled. Of course, they're also the perfect option for those with small gardens, patios and balconies. A challenge though is keeping plants well watered during hot weather or when going away.
It's a tricky business to get watering plants in containers just right. Continual watering from above can cause long-term damage. Watering little but often, or shallow watering, prevents water from running out the bottom of the container or overwatering but equally it can encourage shallow root systems, which provide a poor foundation for larger plants, and also inhibit the plant from accessing all the nutrients in the soil. Likewise, you need to know your plants - some like lots of water, others prefer a drier soil.
Sankey's range of self-watering troughs keeps plants well hydrated even in the driest condition and plants get exactly the amount of water they need.
When first planting up self-watering containers, always give a thorough watering from on top as young plants will have shallow roots. As the plant beds in and grows stronger, start using the water reservoir.
Sankey's Premium Self Watering Trough has an easy to fill reservoir for water that's built into the bottom of the container. The inner pot is specially moulded so the soil and roots have access to the water without remaining constantly in contact with it. This prevents water logging and also provides oxygen to the roots.
The troughs also have an overflow hole in case of over watering and an easy to read water level indicator.
For those who are keen on growing produce in containers, self-watering containers are said to produce higher yields than either traditional containers or even in-ground plants. As plants absorb the moisture from their roots and lose it through evaporation from their leaves, this creates a ‘transpirational pull' where the plant can have a constant source of water, allowing it to grow continuously and at peak performance.
Benefits of self-watering containers:
You can water whenever without worrying about overwatering
Encourages deeper root systems
Plants get exactly the amount of water they need
Ability to add dilute fertilisers to the water
Sankey's Premium Self Watering Trough is available in two sizes and in green or terracotta. Prices are £10.99 for the 60cm length trough and £12.99 for the 80cm length trough.
