I'm just not in the mood - why men have gone off sex
The Chinese say that "he's at half past six" to describe a man who has lost interest in sex. This phrase seems appropriate for many men in their 30s and 40s and beyond, many of whom at the prime of their lives have gone off sex. It's a contemporary taboo that no one is talking about but many men are suffering and so are their partners.
The reasons are not easy to pin down but Hannah Richards and Claud Sarjeant of London's MoveThreeSixty, a private gym and treatment centre, have both noticed a pattern of men reporting a diminished sex drive and the problem seems to be increasing. Fortunately Claud, Hannah and the team at MoveThreeSixty know what to do about it.
Claud and Hannah, who was recently named by ES Magazine as one of London's top fertility experts both believe that the problem is environmental, mechanical and physiological.
"Not to put too fine a point on it, but some of the men that come to see us at the clinic tell us flat out that they have just lost interest in sex, whether for procreation or recreation. One of the first questions I ask men or women that come to see me about fertility or other issues is whether they are actually having sex and often the answer is an embarrassed ‘no' or ‘rarely'".
This myth that men think about sex every two seconds is just not true. The fast pace and demands of living in London, commuting, job stresses, financial worries, the pressure to succeed, poor diet, lack of sleep and exercise are all contributing factors. It is more likely these days that female partner in a couple will hear "not tonight dear I've got a headache" than the other way round.
The team at Move Three Sixty work from the inside out and really get to understand the individual's body and problems, work out whether the problems are chemical (food related) or physical, or both. Because they assess their clients so thoroughly they are able to design programmes that work.
When clients come to see Hannah, who is a functional diagnostic nutritionist and metabolic typing advisor, she runs a full assessment and then gets to work on treating them so that they can restore balance. Hannah assesses her male clients' lifestyle, hormone levels and diet and works with them on an individually designed programme to rebalance their steroidal hormonal pathways. By following her regime and working with Claud on the mechanical side they get their male clients to a state of health that restores his energy and zest for life and desire for sex.
"If there is too much oestrogen in a man's body because of food and lifestyle choices and their testosterone levels has dropped they will go off sex, we can rebalance that by changing diet", says Claud. "Often though I see many men who have mechanical problems that stem from a misalignment of the sacral plexus and this can cause the "half past six" problem. This puts undue strain on the nerves in the sacrum which then can't feed the genitals which can lead to erectile function issues. I work with my male clients to fix this and between us we get our clients back on track. The results are happy clients and happy partners", says Claud.
