My client, Fuld & Company, have just released their ‘Boiling the Frog' survey results, which have interesting insights into perceived disruptive threats to the life sciences industry from senior executives around the world. Below is a very brief summary which I hope you will find interesting. If you'd like to look at the full survey results you can find them at http://www.fuld.com/white-papers. Has the pharmaceutical industry's frog already boiled?*
A global survey and report about life sciences industry shocks that concern life sciences executives.
European executives' biggest fear - and one they have generally failed to address - increasing government legislation
A survey carried out by Fuld & Company˟ amongst 192 executives from pharmaceutical companies in North America, Asia Pacific and Europe (30%, 42% and 28% respectively) asked ‘Have you identified any disruptions that could potentially affect your organisation?' ‘Do you think your company is adequately prepared for these disruptions?'
The findings are contained in the first of a series of global industry surveys, ‘Boiling the Frog'. The life sciences industry was the first of these.
North American executives were most worried about industry shocks coming directly from their competition. In sharp contrast, European respondents were far more nervous about sudden changes in regulations and more government interference with their business.
Large pharma companies in the Asia Pacific region are, for the most part, preparing for an identified disruption with over 50% stating they have made significant preparations in anticipation of the disruption. Not so their Western cousins. More than 75% of European participants stated their companies did not make any preparation for the disruption. For North American the ratio was even more skewed with a 9 to 1 response (88%) stating that their firms did not make any significant changes.
Details of these findings and more are contained in ‘Boiling the Frog™', a global survey and report about potential industry shocks that concern life sciences executives, prepared by Fuld & Company. The full survey is available from Jane Martin, at à propos: jane@a-propos.co.uk 020 8996 1760

*Boiling the Frog refers to the odd fact that a frog cannot sense gradual changes in temperature, even as the water around it gets hot enough to literally boil it to death. Without the ability to observe changing environmental conditions, the frog can find itself boiled alive before realising it is in trouble. Like the proverbial boiled frog, are life sciences executives ignoring competitive threats until the opportunity to react has passed them by?
