Stroud Parents Launch Safety Awareness Network To Protect Local Families
A new Safety Awareness Network created by parents in Gloucestershire is officially launched this week to raise awareness of common dangers affecting individuals and families. The network focuses on personal, home, community, school and workplace safety issues.
The network makes it simple for families and children to find out about current dangers in their area, participate in campaigns and learn important skills to keep each other safe.
Chris Davis set up the network following three recent incidents in the Gloucestershire area when children under 13 have been approached by people trying to lure them into their cars. In all incidents the children escaped unharmed, but very disturbed by the incidents. "The lack of publicity these incidents received is a disgrace. Despite having children of the same age as those who were approached we only heard about these incidents a week later in our local paper. Why weren't all schools in the area informed immediately? The technology to let people know about these types of dangers exists and isn't complicated but for some reason it doesn't get used. We want to change that before someone does get harmed."
"Anyone can take part in and support safety campaigns, projects, challenges, appeals and competitions on the network. We provide opportunities for people to learn new skills, such as first aid for diagnosing and treating casualties in emergencies. We also run participation campaigns where we ask people to complete an action, like testing their smoke alarms, before adding their support. Where we can we ask people to share these campaigns with friends and family to keep more people safe," Chris said.

The Safety Awareness Network is working with a mobile app partner to develop a simple mobile app and warning system to let people know about current issues and dangers in their area.
"As a parent of young children I know how difficult it is to manage all the risks children are exposed to, in and outside the home. But there are a few simple things people can do to help reduce the risks and we try to remind people about these without sensationalising the issues. If our efforts help to keep one family or child safe then it will all be worth it." said Chris.
The network acts as an online hub for new and existing safety campaigns and projects."It is not your typical safety site," explains Chris."People and organisations are encouraged to add their own content to the site. This includes their own campaigns and projects. Once a campaign or project is added and shared online, we help to promote and develop it to make sure it reaches the biggest possible audience. At the moment we are planning some competitions to get more young people involved and interested in their surroundings."
The safety awareness network is continuing to seek individuals, organisations and services who can help to support and raise awareness of important safety issues. Join the network athttp://safety.addmysupport.comor contactsafety@addmysupport.comfor more information.
