PRESS RELEASE: Calling all the heroes, Away Resorts needs you
Calling all the Military Heroes, Away Resorts needs you

Back by popular demand, Away Resorts hosts Military Heroes break for second year running to remember World War II veterans

Following the success of last year’s first-ever Military Heroes break, Mill Rythe Holiday Village on Hayling Island will be honouring the members of the armed forces again this September with its second dedicated Military Heroes break for former and serving service men and women.

In previous years, veteran sailors and Royal Marines have gathered together at Mill Rythe (www.mill-rythe.co.uk) to remember their fallen comrades from the Landing Ship Tank and Landing Craft Association.

The reunion in 2011 was thought to be the final one as organising the gathering was proving too difficult for the ageing veterans.

However, Mill Rythe Holiday Village stepped in last year and offered to organise and host the reunion for them as well as providing a week of entertainment that celebrated the lives of these military heroes and took them on a number of trips down memory lane, with music and events from the 1930s ’40s and ’50s.

The break was such a success that the park has decided to host it again this year in two durations: four nights from 16-20 September; and three nights from 20-23 September.

Away Resorts, which owns Mill Rythe, is committed to honouring our military heroes – both past and currently serving – and is passionate about providing the perfect location and entertainment at an affordable price, which is why a three-night half-board break starts at £95 per person.

The Show Cast entertainment team at the park will be performing the UK’s only musical and theatrical tribute to forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn.

The show, which charts the life of Dame Vera Lynn from a young, up-and-coming band singer before the war to her career as radio presenter and popular war-time singer performing for the British armed forces in Burma during the Second World War.

Away Resorts creative director Max Barraclough says the team at Mill Rythe are keen to honour these veterans and thought the best way to do this was to put on shows that would revoke the nostalgia of the war-time era.

"It was about the songs, they meant something. We want the show to remind people how important these words and melodies were to the British people during the war," says Max.

Talking about the lengths that the creative and entertainment team at Away Resorts have gone to for this production, Max says: “Radio played such a pivotal role during the war-time era, and Dame Vera was an essential part of this and played a key role in keeping the troops spirits high.

“We have pulled out all the stops for this show, sourcing original 1930s and ’40s props, including vintage radios, decommissioned Enfield No 4 rifles and WW2 British Army Khaki Drill uniform sourced from as far a field as California. We have also enlisted the help of the UK’s number one vintage blogger Retro Chick Gemma Seagar and vintage stylists Historical Sauces with costumes, make-up, hair, etc."

Other entertainment over the three and four-night breaks include the ABBA LIve Party and visiting cabaret acts

About Mill Rythe Holiday Village

  • Mill Rythe Holiday Village on Hayling Island is owned by UK holiday parks operator Away Resorts, which launched in 2008, when it acquired its first park, Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight. The operator then went on to buy Tattershall Lakes Country Park in Lincolnshire before acquiring Mill Rythe in 2010. Away Resorts bought its fourth park, Barmouth Bay in north Wales earlier this year.
  • Mill Rythe Holiday Village is one of the original 1940s Sunshine Holiday Parks and has welcomed generations of the same families since the ‘40s because of its high-quality, yet affordable, half-board holiday offering.
  • Since Away Resorts acquired the park in 2010, it has invested more than £1 million in refurbishing all of the rooms, renovating the park’s public spaces and employing a high-quality entertainment team which boasts West End credentials. The investment has paid off as the park has been awarded Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for consistently scoring four stars or above in its reviews for two years in a row – 2012 and 2013.
  • Also, Mill Rythe Holiday Village won 2013 Group Travel Award for Best All-inclusive Group Holiday Venue.
  • The team at the park have embraced Mill Rythe’s holiday camp heritage while keeping its holiday experiences to its guests firmly grounded in 21st-century entertainment and culture.
  • The Mill Rythe team pride themselves on going that extra mile for their guests, and the comments on Tripadvisor – “A good budget holiday but with five-start treatment”* – are a key indicator of how hard the staff work. *Review posted on May 31, 2013
