Barrett Steel Saves the Day for ‘Help for Heroes' Bradford event/bs044 / 15.08.13
Barrett Steel Limited, one of the UK's largest steel stockholders, has come to the rescue of a Help for Heroes event on 21st September 2013 in Bradford, organised by voluntary fundraising organisation, Escape for Life (EFL), by donating the steel required for a daredevil escape stunt.
Antony Britton, founder of EFL, said: "On a cold, wet October evening in 2012 we staged our first escape stunt flying the EFL banner.
"We'd expected it to be a small affair, but over 200 people crammed themselves on the bridges and banks of the River Calder in Wakefield and witnessed the escape. We raised over £1000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and due to the success of the event we decided to do it again this year, only bigger and better."
Escape artist, Roslyn Walker, an EFL volunteer since the beginning, explains: "The Escape for Life team is made up of professional performers, escapologists, engineers and business people who donate their time and money to projects so that every penny raised from public donations goes to the chosen charity.
"It was decided that EFL 2013 would raise money for our chosen charity, Help for Heroes, and initially we were promised a lot of support.
"One-by-one these promises were broken and we all started to doubt whether our plans for this year would actually come to fruition. We were flat broke and literally days away from pulling the plug completely.
"Word got out that we were in serious trouble. Like the ‘Man of Steel' movie character the guys at Barrett Steel swooped in and breathed new life into the event by donating the steel required for the escape stunt. Before I knew what was going on Steve Dykes and Chris Lamb at the company had mobilised the troops and we had a truck load of steel delivered to the door. So much steel that we've been able to design a completely new, never-seen-before escape that will blow our audience's minds."
Antony Britton said: "Without Steve, Chris and the rest of the team at Barrett Steel there would be no EFL 2013."
