A series of training courses aimed at improving efficiency within the UK's Fire and Rescue Service are achieving 100 per cent pass rates.
The candidates have achieved the BTEC Level 3 Award in Management and have gained valuable practical skills in the field.
The courses have been run by Staffordshire-based MLR Business Consultants Ltd, which is half way through its three-year contract as a preferred supplier of Management Development training to the South East Region of the Fire & Rescue Service.
Michelle Renhard, managing director of MLR Business Consultants, explained: "It has been 18 months now since we won the contract and we have run a whole series of management development training courses. Some for single services and others where several Brigades have agreed to share a course at a central venue."
Sara Weeden, workforce development manager at Surrey Fire & Rescue Service, commented: "The courses from MLR are really helping to develop our managers in their roles. There has been a greater understanding of managing performance and we've noticed that processes have become more efficient.
"We've also seen an increase in confidence, particularly when managers have to deal with performance management issues."
The courses include highly participative exercises, skills practice activities and discussions. Each Level 3 course consists of four, two-day seminars spaced one month apart to help maintain high learning energy. MLR also helps managers develop a personal action plan to be implemented and written up as a Management Report by the end of the programme.
During every seminar, each candidate has an individual one-to-one coaching session with a course tutor. They also receive support for guided learning and help with keeping on track with action plans and management reports.
Sara Weeden continued: "We really value MLR for its ability to be flexible around our training objectives. We sit down with the MLR team and discuss our outcomes and they tailor the courses around our specific requirements.
"Over the next 18 months we're looking to provide more learning for our managers to take them to the next level, always striving to build and develop their skills."
Michelle Renhard added: "It's been an energetic and busy 18 months for the MLR team. We're really looking forward to the second half of the contract with high expectations and great confidence."
