Help employees with childcare as new school term starts
As the new school term approaches, parents will no doubt be rushing around preparing for children returning to school or starting school for the first time. Working parents, in particular find this time of year difficult as they have to manage childcare around their working day. Employers can make this easier by offering Childcare Vouchers to help staff save up to £933* per year on their childcare costs.
Finding and funding childcare can be stressful. Giving staff the opportunity to use Childcare Vouchers will not only relieve some of this stress by helping to make their childcare more affordable, it can increase their motivation at work and improve staff retention.
If you already offer a Childcare Voucher scheme, you are obliged under HMRC rules to promote the scheme to your staff. Use the new school term to re-promote your scheme to remind employees how much they can save on their childcare costs and attract new employees to use the scheme which will in turn reduce your Employer National Insurance contributions.
As the Government is launching a new Tax-free Childcare scheme in the autumn of 2015 where the Government will be contributing up to 20% of a child's childcare costs (on fees of up to £6,000), now is the time to attract parents to the benefits of Childcare Vouchers. Many working parents will not be able to make the same level of savings under the new scheme as they can through using Childcare Vouchers. The Childcare Voucher scheme will be closed to new entrants when the Tax-free Childcare scheme is implemented, only allowing those already using it to benefit from the savings it provides. It is yet to be determined whether the Tax-free Childcare scheme will be as flexible as Childcare Vouchers**.
