Apple devices continue to dominate online dealer access, new statistics show
Apple devices are continuing dominate online mobile access to dealer web sites, according to new statistics released by motor industry technology specialist iVendi.
Figures show that iPhones and iPads account for around three out of four of the devices used to access the company's CarFinanceChecker service when accessed by a mobile device.
James Tew, director at iVendi, said: "These statistics are quite interesting. Industry figures show that Android now has an 80% share of the smartphone market and 40% of the tablet sector but when it comes to people actually using their devices to access dealer web sites, Apple users seem to outnumber them dramatically.
"There is some evidence across the IT sector that Apple users tend to be more technologically literate and comfortable with mobile access, making greater use of apps, cameras and video while on the move - but what our finding really means for car and van dealers is that they should make sure that their online resources work really well on iPads and iPhones if they want to generate business."
James added that, over time, there would probably be a gradual shift towards online mobile access through Android, Windows and other mobile platforms.
He said: "Apple's technological lead is being gradually eroded and the general IT industry view is that there will be a number of platforms widely used over the next few years. This is why we have been telling dealers for some time that responsive web design, which should work well on any device, is the way forward."
Launched in December, Car Finance Checker is designed by iVendi to plug into almost any dealer web site and, by taking a few details from potential customers, enables them to check their eligibility for credit with the dealer's panel of lenders. The product duplicates criteria from a wide range of lenders from prime through to sub-prime, making it suitable for all kinds of new and used car retailers from the most exclusive franchise dealers through to mainstream manufacturers, car supermarkets and independent used car specialists. In use, it is tailored to the existing panel of lenders used by each dealer and integrated completely into their web site.
