New online network tackles health issues faced by city residents

The City Health Network launched this month to help people and families cope with the negative physical effects of living or working in a city.

Challenged with finding a way to help different urban communities feel happier and healthier, entrepreneur Chris Davis decided the differences between rural and urban living needed to be acknowledged head-on and theCity Health Network  was established.

Chris Davis, the network's founder, explains how the idea came about. "I was at a meeting in London and during it the conversation moved on to how social networking could be used to help improve the health of a London community. This got me thinking about the general health issues that arise from living in the city."

Having previously worked with people who thought of themselves as being rurally-isolated, Chris realised there are extremes where ever you live. "Despite the convenience of having all types of services at your finger tips, city living can be much more challenging and stressful, especially when you are trying to be healthy and look after your health. The convenience of things comes at a price. For example urban populations are exposed to potentially damaging levels of air pollution."

"As well as the air quality issues, people in the countryside generally live at a slightly slower pace. They tend to find it easier to build a personal support network around them, which can be an important buffer against stress and poor health. Trying to create the same type of support network in a city is a much harder task and has to really be worked at," Chris explains.

The City Health Network provides members with regular healthy offers, access to experts and ideas to help people cope with the negative physical effects of living or working in a city. But the City Health network in not a conventional deals or discounts site. The focus is on helping individuals lead healthier lives.

Members can post their own personal requests for support, deals or opportunities. "From personal experience I know living or commuting in the city can be expensive. Everything seems to cost more and can be a barrier to living healthily. If affordability or any other factor is holding people back from living a healthy lifestyle then they can make a request based on what they need. This is the start of the support process," says Chris.

The network has received lots of support from city businesses, and individuals living and working in cities around the UK. "Support from companies has been great. We have over one hundred companies taking part and Lifted Therapy, who providevisiting hairdressing, beauty and massage services  to homes in Greater London, have sponsored the network. This has given us a huge boost and has enabled us to get the network up and running," reveals Chris.

If you live or work in any European city and want to experience a happier, healthier lifestyle you can visit theCity Health Network  and sign up using any social networking account or email.
