Barrett Steel makes ‘Olympic' commitment to a greener steel industry/ bs042- Tr- / 12.11.13

Barrett Steelmade an ‘Olympic'-sized commitment to reducing its carbon emissions and making its operations amongst the greenest in the steel industry, when it installed a large commercial solar PV (photovoltaic) system* at its headquarters in Bradford. The installation, one of the biggest roof top systems in Yorkshire, was installed by Energy Jump, the Sheffield based renewable energy company.

[image]James Barrett, Managing Director atBarrett Steelcomments: "The solar PV project, which covers 1240m² of roof space (almost exactly the area of an Olympic swimming pool), is part of our nationwide Environmental Improvement Strategy. 728 solar panels will provide the site with clean electricity for decades, saving approximately 80,000 kg of CO²annually and resulting in the excess generation of electricity being fed back in to the national grid.

Rob Samuelson, Commercial Director of Energy Jump, said: "We are delighted to have installed the system for Barrett. The company is demonstrating its clear understanding of the benefits of a PV system, including cost saving, energy security and carbon savings. The company is helping to lead the way in making the steel industry greener."

Barrett SteelGroup is also working towards Group wide accreditation for the environmental standard, ISO 14001:2004, following the award in October 2012 toBarrett SteelServices Bradford. As part of the process the Group has already implemented initiatives to reduce electricity, water and fuel consumption, optimise raw material use and become more energy efficient in production processes.

*The Barrett Steel installation -technical information

The commercial solar PV (photovoltaic) project at Barrett Steel's headquarters in Bradford is a 182 kilowatt peak system.

It comprises 728 polycrystalline 250W panels, which have been combined with Fronius central inverters, to generate 140,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

Barrett monitors the system's performance through an on-line, real time monitoring system, which records performance and notifies the company of any potential system issues.
