NORTHCOT WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR ‘BEST USE OF BRICK'
Northcot Brick, one of the UK's foremost independent brick manufacturers, has won a prestigious 2013 ‘Build It Award' in the category of ‘Best use of Brick'.
The award winning project, Norham Gardens, is an impressive historic residence located in the North Oxford Conservation Area. Originally built in 1873, the detached house was divided into eight flats in the 1950s, and has recently undergone significant restoration work in order to return it to its former glory as a family home.
Joint winner, Riach Architects, appointed Northcot Brick to supply handmade bricks in an imperial size from its ‘Tudor Restoration' range, in order to create a seamless four-storey extension at the rear and an elegant orangery at the side of the property.
"The success of this project owes a great deal to the quality and the sympathetic appearance of the new brickwork," said Douglas Riach, Director of Riach Architects. "The required alterations needed to be as subtle and unobtrusive as possible in order to preserve the architectural integrity of the building. We looked at several alternatives, but the ‘Tudor Restoration' range from Northcot Brick perfectly complemented the tone, texture and character of the existing brickwork".
The project has also been awarded a certificate for ‘Building Conservation' in the Oxford Preservation Trust Awards 2013.
"We are delighted to have received this prestigious ‘Build It' award in conjunction with Riach Architects," said Michael Brown, Managing Director of Northcot Brick. "Such recognition clearly demonstrates the aesthetic importance of well-matched traditionally manufactured handmade bricks particularly in restoration projects."
Northcot Brick uses traditional bench mould techniques that have hardly changed over the centuries. The bricks are then fired in one of the last remaining coal fired kilns in the UK, in order to achieve an instant maturity that can enhance both new build and restoration projects.
As well as handmade bricks, Northcot manufactures a wide range of wire cut, reclaim and special shapes and can brick match to precise customer specifications.
Northcot Brick will be exhibiting onstand A27 at the Build It exhibition, which takes place on 22ndto 23rdFebruary 2014 at Bluewater in Kent.
