Underfloor heating helps to eradicate dust mites
Steven Rooney, Sales Director of Gaia (formerly DEVI Electroheat), explains how underfloor heating (UFH) can make a substantial contribution to eradicating the house dust mite which is the most common allergy trigger in the UK.
Allergens produced in the faeces of dust mites appear to be the major cause of sensitisation and development of asthma. Since the domestic environment provides conditions in which the house dust mites thrives, careful house design and choice of furnishings are important factors in helping to reduce and eliminate house dust mites.
There are many benefits of UFH including making the home more hygienic no matter if the floorcovering is carpet, ceramic, stone, marble, vinyl or timber.
Many people prefer carpet as it is warm and comfortable. However, it can provide the ideal habitat for dust mites. These mites need two essential ingredients to survive - warmth and moisture. Below 40% humidity, they cannot survive as they can only take in moisture through the skin so by raising the floor temperature to 26°c it reduces the moisture content to a level where the dust mite cannot survive. As the moisture level at the base of the carpet pile reduces, the dust mite makes its way to the surface of the carpet where it will eventually die and can be vacuumed up.
It is well known that hard flooring is more hygienic than carpet as it can be easily cleaned and by installing UFH these normally cold surfaces become warm.
Gaia offers a full design, supply and installation service for wet and electric underfloor heating solutions. Gaia can coordinate complete flooring installations which greatly simplifies the installation process and provides just one point of responsibility at every stage of a project.Gaia is also the sole UK projects partner for DEVI.
