New Sports Injuries Treatment Centre uses lasers to aid quick recovery for off road mountain biking enthusiast

When enthusiastic off road cyclist and self employed Dorchester carpenter Simon Chainey, aged 27, fractured his collar bone following a cycling fall, he turned to low level laser therapist Suzanne Norton who, at her new dedicated Sports Injury & Trauma Treatment Centre in Sturminster Newton, was able to get Simon back to work after just four weeks using specialised laser therapy.

[image]Suzanne explains, "When Simon came to me he had fractured his collar bone following a cycling fall, the ends of the bone were crossed and he was in pain with restricted mobility. He had been seen by an orthopaedic surgeon who didn't give him 100% assurance that the bones would knit and would possibly require plating. This would mean waiting a further 10 weeks before he would be fit for work.

"At the clinic I assessed him and treated him with near red laser therapy twice weekly for three weeks, and advised on exercise and support to the arm and shoulder during the healing process. After the first week, Simon reported that he was no longer in pain. During the subsequent weeks the range of movement rapidly increased and on visiting the orthopaedic surgeon on week three following the fall he did not require surgery as the joint was knitting."

On discharge at week four, Simon had full range of movement in all planes and was able to return to work, although he did confess he had been doing gentle work during the previous week. The Sturminster Newton Centre, based atBack2Back Healthcare, is thought to be unique in the service it can provide for those based in the South West with sports-related injuries including fractures whether they are new, past or present, pinned, plated or plastered.

Suzanne explains the science, "Each treatment is designed for the injury that presents but usually we will use a combination of Low Level Laser therapy (LLLT), medical acupuncture, physical therapy to improve oxygen flow, and sports massage in each session. Other therapy modalities can also be used to support the joint during the acute phase, or to increase range of motion that was lost due to the fall or injury.

"The lasers are Class 3B and highly powerful in their effectiveness for these types of injury. It is not necessary to wait until you are out of a plaster cast, the treatment can start as soon as possible."

Suzanne explains that the type of laser used is very important. "Low level Lasers emit light that is absorbed by the cells reducing the stress on the cell from the injury. The light is absorbed and converted to energy which means the repair process can begin by increasing cell proliferation and also leading to a reduction in inflammation and pain."

Each session is totally painless and patients experience no side effects. Also sessions can be performed up to three times a day, speeding up the recovery process.Sessions are performed twice weekly as this has been shown to give optimum results, but this can be varied to suit the patient.

The specialised treatment can increase recovery time by as much as fifty per cent, particularly important for people who cannot afford to be away from work for long periods or need to get back to sports training as quickly as possible.

Simon says that he is delighted with the speed of his recovery. "Running my own business means that I cannot afford to take the time off work, and now I can get back to work and start to train again for the Enduro events that I love. I would like everyone who does a sport like mountain biking to know that there is a new Centre which not only helps with pain caused by injury, but will also help you make a really quick recovery."
