UK Carline responds to suggested 60mph speed limit for Motorways
European Union rules on air pollution could see 60mph limit on UK motorways
UK car leasing giant, UK Carline, has this week reacted to reports that a 60mph speed limit could be rolled out in the UK as part of an EU-backed directive to quell pollution levels.
The news comes as a 32-mile stretch of road on the M1, running through South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, is to be designated as a 60mph zone. The new speed limit is to be introduced in an effort to reduce air pollution, and officials are said to be debating whether to roll out a 60mph limit across the whole of the UK.
A number of respected motoring organisations have already expressed concerns over a push for a reduced motorway speed limit by green campaigners, arguing that different stretches of motorway having different speed limits at different times would only serve to confuse drivers and could well cause more road traffic accidents.
The soon-to-be enforced 60mph speed limit for the M1 would only be active between 7am and 7pm each day.
Edmund King, president of AA, believes that new laws won't be well received by motorists:
"It's the only way to reduce emissions until the technology kicks in and makes engines cleaner, so it's something we have to live with. You can't really be against it, but many drivers will be frustrated and bemused. Earlier this year there was talk of an 80mph speed limit and now it's gone down to 60mph."
While David Bizley, RAC technical director, suggested that the 60mph could in time stretch throughout the UK:
"This is a landmark proposal as to the best of our knowledge motorway speed limits have not previously been lowered in order to comply with environmental legislation.
"It could pave the way for similar restrictions on other sections of motorway. While preserving air quality is obviously a paramount concern there will inevitably be a negative impact on business efficiency and individual mobility."
UK Carline frequently reacts to industry related news. A representative for the company believes that there is merit to both sides of the argument:
"There's an obvious need to reduce pollution and campaigners are definitely right in attempting to tackle this serious environmental issue, but many transport experts have expressed concerns. Having speed limits changing based on the stretch of motorway and time of day could result in more road traffic accidents.
"Safety is a big thing, especially for car leasing companies like us. We take the safety of our drivers seriously and we would hate for them to be put at risk because of confusing speed laws.
"Ultimately driver safety should take priority. It will be interesting to see how the new speed limit on parts of the M1 affects road safety. If the speed limit doesn't have a negative impact on road safety then we see no reason why a 60mph law couldn't be rolled out for the whole of the UK - the environmental benefits would be huge."
