Multi-Award Winning Exeter MSCP Proving Popular with the Public

One year on from being named ‘Overall Winner' of the 2013 British Parking Awards at the Lancaster Hotel in London, The John Lewis Car Park in Exeter is proving popular with the public, as well as shoppers visiting the neighbouring store, as a result of its enhanced amenity.

The contractor, Matrix, and Exeter City Council, also scooped the "Best Refurbishment" award with TREMCO's MMA car park system improving both the appearance and the physical performance of the ageing structure which had been rebranded as the John Lewis Car Park to herald the retail chain opening its westernmost destination.

The detailed contract carried out by Matrix on the former King William Street Car Park made full use of TREMCO's MMA Rapid Cure Flexible Waterproofing System together with TREMCO CP470 soffit coating. Upgrading the reflectance in this way was also a consideration in the car park having previously earned a Safer Parking Award from the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Matrix was familiar with the fast curing and excellent wear characteristics of TREMCO's MMA Rapid Cure Flexible Waterproofing System from previous contracts, and carried out cost comparisons with other available products. tremco illbruck arranged for representatives of Exeter City Council to inspect a car park at Gatwick Airport, a previous winner of the BPA ‘Best Refurb' award, where the same materials had been used, which led to the specification being confirmed. Furthermore, as the TREMCO system worked out significantly more cost effective than the rival systems, the savings enabled Exeter City Council to upgrade the access to the car park.

The MMA Rapid Cure Flexible Waterproofing System was used to treat both the roof deck and then, with the addition of crushed basalt aggregate, it provided a running surface on all of the vehicle ramps: offering enhanced traction and wear resistance. The TREMCO system was also specified for all of the intermediate deck surfaces.

The colour scheme chosen uses ‘John Lewis Green' to mark the parking bays and grey for the vehicle aisle-ways, while the pedestrian walkways are identified in red. The TREMCO CP470 was selected in bright white.

Tim Whittaker of Matrix Solutions commented: "The contract to refurbish the King William Street car park went very well, finishing on time and representing a real transformation. We looked at the possible system solutions for the job and value engineered it - finding that the choice ofTREMCOwould save enough money to allow an existing brick entrance lobby to be knocked down and replaced by a smart new glazed entrance. That and the client's positive impression of the Gatwick car park, which tremco illbruck's technical manager took them to see, sealed the specification."
