PRESS RELEASE- FEBRUARY 2014

New fashion brand Stanley Kane: typifying the diversification of young male fashion

Generally, compared with previous generations, the modern man is more receptive to fashion. Young men nowadays have grown up in a culture whereby buying clothes is just as much of a ritualistic obsession as it is with women. As a result, it is no surprise that global menswear sales are growing at about 10 per cent a year. Nor is it surprising that, according to a recent survey conducted by London shopping centre Westfield, men on average spend £988 on fashion per year (only 10% less than women).

While more men with more disposable income may help explain this upsurge in popularity for men's fashion, arguably it is more of a cultural change.

In part, this is due to the fact that there are more men in the media with distinctive, tastefully flamboyant outfits, who highlight the heterogeneous nature of men's style these days (from Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner to Benedict Cumberbatch to Kanye West). Partially it is also a reaction against more conservative styles that dominated during the noughties.

Whereas, retrospectively, the 2000s can be seen as a gruesome extension of the nineties fashion-wise, with sportswear and smart casual looks dominant, nowadays things are a little more interesting.

Chris Page, a man with two decades' experience working in fashion, say that it's a thing of the past to try and pull off an effortlessly casual look: "Nowadays young men are more experimental and aspirant in terms of what they wear compared to previous generations, aware of what's tasteful and what's not, but also more willing to take risks. Certainly, men's fashion these days seems to be a reaction against the conservative styles that prevailed during the last decade" especially so called "lifestyle clothing "many of these lifestyle brands which were considered cool a few years ago are now the ubiquitous "Dads' rags".

"Another explanation behind the renewed interest in male fashion is the rise of online sales channels; nowadays men have a fast and convenient alternative to high street shopping, allowing them to search for exactly the kind of clothes they want, without going through the hassle of browsing manually".

Tapping into the online trend amongst male consumers, Page is the director of a new exclusively online fashion brand, Stanley Kane, whose eclectic menswear features designs take cues from a vast array of influences, both retro and contemporary. With clothes that amalgamate looks inspired by indie and grunge bands, classic Americana workwear and American collegiate styles, as well as fresh takes on military, psychedelic and skater styles, Stanley Kane are a prime example of an independent fashion brand not afraid to experiment.

Chris concludes: "Lately, young men are keen to be more expressive with their style, without necessarily going to extremes by wearing outlandish meggings or tartan trousers (although some do!) The result is that young men have embraced a more diversified, colourful sense of style. Stanley Kane's aim is to cater to that sense of freshness and diversity that is now trending in men's fashion, bringing out contemporary, yet affordable clothes to fashion forward young men".
