TREMCO MMA technology underpins art stone balcony treatment
When a company specialising in highly visual floor and wall surfaces received a commission to recover a large balcony area for a private client in Edinburgh, the condition of the ageing asphalt and the Scottish climate meant there was no hesitation in turning to tremco illbruck for guidance on waterproofing the installation.
ArtStone Projects is based in Walkerburn, Peebleshire, and works all across Scotland and the north of England, installing surfaces such as terrazzo or polished concrete for clients in the residential, retail and recreational sectors.
The recent contract concerning a large residential property on the Scottish capital's Lanark Road saw tremco illbruck recommend the use of its MMA waterproofing system to offer flexibility in respect of the large degree of thermal movement expected in the deck. It also delivers a rapid cure to allow the contractor to make best use of dry spells during the autumn weather.
The specification encompassed CP360 Primer to ensure a good bond with the weathered asphalt which was to remain, and CP215 Base Coat to help smooth and seal the surface. The installation was completed by ArtStone Projects applying CP930 Sealer with a mushroom coloured flake to create an attractive and hardwearing surface.
Alan Liversedge, who runs ArtStone Projects, comments: "Our business is all about providing high end, artistic wall and floor finishes - including patterns and company logos."We have employed TREMCO products on five or six other jobs and always contact the company's Service department if we are in any doubt about waterproofing issues. In the case of the Lanark Road job in Edinburgh, the old asphalt had some problems with pooling of water and a quite poor, rippled appearance. There were also the considerations that the area is subject to a lot of snow in the winter, but often very high temperatures in the summer when the sun is up as it faces south.
"tremco illbruck's technical representative prepared a specification for us and we installed the materials. The grey primer for the MMA system bonded really well to the bitumen and then the semi-flexible base coat also did a superb job of levelling out the sags and ripples in the asphalt. It took us two days to complete the work, but the client is quite delighted and is talking to us about having some other balconies treated in the same way. We would happily use this spec on another 100 balconies."
