Norbord's Sterling OSB is the panel product of choice for Caledonian Modular, one of the UK's leading suppliers of modular off-site manufactured buildings.

Delivering projects from school and offices, through to medium and high rise hotels, student halls and residential blocks, Caledonian Modular offers flexible and bespoke designs that allow the use of a variety of finishes to exactly meet the client's needs.

In addition to commercial and residential buildings, Caledonian Modular also has important public sector clients in the custodial and military sectors.

Whether the outer cladding is of brick, render or bespoke panels, the standard backing board is a sturdy layer of Sterling OSB, the UK's leading brand of structural oriented strand board.

"We regularly use Sterling OSB forsheathing and decking in walls, roofs and floors" says Steve Wightman, Caledonian Group's Business Development Director.

"Our choice of materials is always based on a balance of two things: performance and value. We do use other products , but Sterling OSB has more often than not proved the optimum material" he says. "We need the strength, but we don't need the smooth surface finish of plywood because the sheathing is never exposed. Therefore Sterling OSB does just what we need and at a competitive price".

Furthermore, the performance of OSB, particularly with regard to moisture resistance, has improved a lot in recent years, adds Mr Wightman.

Another important consideration for Caledonian Modular is price stability and reliability of supply. "We purchase our OSB through our local distributors under an annual purchase agreement. Price certainty and a robust supply chain are important to us, and with Norbord we know we can get that" says Mr Wightman.

With a maximum capacity of about 2,500 modules per annum, each with an average floor area of about 30m2, Caledonian Modular consumes in excess of 200,000m2 of Sterling OSB each year.

Caledonian Modular operates 10 factories spread across three sites: one at Driffield, East Yorkshire and two at Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Modular buildings offer a rapid, low-cost permanent alternative to traditional on-site construction. "The main advantages are speed, sustainability, quality and project certainty" says Mr Wightman.

Health and safety is also improved as most work takes place within the controlled environment of a factory and away from the hazards of a live building site.
