PRESS RELEASE
Issued 10 March 2014 – for immediate release
SOLO®-LITE listed by online pound store
The low sodium sea salt, SOLO®-LITE, is being sold by Britain's first online pound store,Hereforapound.com, from today, Monday 10 March – the start of this year's Salt Awareness Week.
The healthy profile and competitive pricing of SOLO®-LITE proved a winning combination for the Hereforapound.com team. Explains Donna Baker, Managing Director and co-founder, "This healthier alternative to regular salt is a great addition to our range, proving the point that products can be good for you as well as inexpensive. As a mum of three myself, I know that families are increasingly concerned about salt intake. With our shoppers tending to be short of time for shopping trips and more middle class," continues Donna Baker, "they are also more health-conscious, making it a great fit."
As well as stocking the 400g retail pack, Hereforapound.com will retail single serve sachets of SOLO®-LITE, sold in packs of 100, to allow consumers to use the product when eating out. The online store also plans to sign up to the government'sSalt Reduction Pledge, an initiative that aims to reduce the average amount of salt eaten in Britain in order to lower people's risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
Commenting on the first listing of the SOLO®-LITE brand with a retailer that has national distribution, Leslie Wilson, Managing Director of The Low Sodium Sea Salt Company, said: "We're absolutely delighted that the management of Hereforapound.com have recognised the demand for this product from consumers interested in making the transition from regular salt without paying significantly more – and the timing of the listing to coincide with Salt Awareness Week is an added bonus."
Health benefits
SOLO®-LITE has been formulated to make it a healthy yet price-competitive alternative to traditional salt. With 30% less sodium than regular salt, it helps to maintain a healthy blood pressure. The health benefits do not stop there, however, as SOLO®-LITE is also enriched with iodine and other nutrients. It contains at least 30 micrograms of iodine per gram, which is equivalent to 20% of the recommended daily allowance for an adult.Recent researchhighlighted the fact that iodine deficiency during pregnancy led to children having slightlylower IQsand less well developed reading ability. In addition to iodine, SOLO®-LITE contains magnesium, potassium and calcium, also nutrients in which people are becoming increasingly deficient and which contribute to maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Just like salt
As versatile and flavoursome as salt, SOLO®-LITE can be used for cooking, baking or discretionary seasoning of food – just as ordinary salt is used – without any significant difference in taste, aroma or texture. In food manufacture, the product is ideal for replacing salt in baked, cured, dairy and processed foods, as well as in snacks and cereals. For the manufacturing and catering trade, SOLO®-LITE is available in 10kg bulk bags, 3kg plastic pails and single serve sachets.

About Salt Awareness Week
An annual event organised by Consensus Action on Salt & Health (CASH), Salt Awareness Week in 2014 will urge consumers to ‘Switch the Salt' and also call for more consistent front-of-pack food labelling in order to help reduce salt consumption. Lowering salt intake helps to lower blood pressure and thereby reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. The government's current target is to reduce salt intake to an average of 6g a day for adults – less for children – from the current average of 8.1g per day. CASH estimates that this would reduce the number of strokes by 22% and heart attacks by 16%, thereby saving some 17,000 lives in the UK as well as achieving general health benefits. CASH will host a Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons on Wednesday 12 March, attended by high-profile delegates from the Department of Health, NGOs and the food industry.
