Sporting hero John Lukic helps raise Macmillan funds at Barrett Steel charity event/bs054 / 14.03.14
Football legend, John Lukic, helped to raise £5729 when he was guest speaker at a recent charity dinner for Macmillan Cancer Support at the Leeds United Elland Road ground. The event was organised by Barrett Steel Limited, part of the Barrett Steel Group, whose head office is in Bradford.
Representatives from Macmillan gave moving speeches to launch the evening, including Julia Featherstone who received support from Macmillan whilst recovering from cancer and who now acts as a volunteer for the charity.
Auction items included a range of football shirts, signed by stars such as Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Christiano Ronaldo. The Messi shirt was auctioned for the highest amount on the night. However a novelty item of a giant pork pie from Robinson's Farm Shop in Halifax created a tough bidding war and sold for £125.
Hayley Cooke from Macmillan Cancer Support said: "We were thrilled that Barrett Steel had chosen to support Macmillan with this event. More than one in three of us will get cancer, and for most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. The money raised from the evening will help fund invaluable support to patients and their families affected by cancer. Thank you to everyone who attended the evening and who supported the fundraising on the night. Barrett Steel have raised enough money from the evening to fund one of our amazing cancer nurse specialists for over a month, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support."
Barrett Steel's Commercial Development Director, Rob Ridge, who had the original idea for the event, comments: "We are delighted with the results of the first ever charity evening for Macmillan. We have had a really enthusiastic response from the audience of 300, including Barrett's customers, suppliers and employees. John Lukic, the former Leeds United goalkeeper was an excellent raconteur and we were given a brilliant comedy stand-up routine from Mick Monroe. We'd like to thank everyone who attended or donated for their generosity and support.

About Macmillan Cancer Support
Every day a staggering 29 people in West Yorkshire hear the devastating news they have cancer, and every day 14 people die from the illness. This will see West Yorkshire's population of people living with cancer nearly double between 2010 and 2030.
We know that in the UK an alarming number of people living with cancer feel isolated because of their illness. Emotionally, financially, practically, spiritually, culturally or because of a lack of information, they are facing cancer alone in some way.
Macmillan is absolutely determined to stop this from happening by being there for every one of these people. But to do this, we need to significantly increase our income and inspire millions of people to support us and get involved with our work.
We are urgently in need of additional support to ensure we can be there for everyone, and make sure that no one has to face cancer alone.
Macmillan provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support for people at every stage of their cancer journey and we rely on our supporters and fundraisers for 98% of our income every year. If you have any questions about cancer, need support or just someone to talk to, call free, Monday to Friday 9am-8pm on 0808 808 00 00 or visitwww.macmillan.org.uk.
