SWA member supplies W30 windows for country house contract
A private owner seeking to refurbish and improve a very large country house in West Sussex has hailed the performance of the W30 steel frame, double glazed windows supplied by a member of the Steel Window Association.
NSB from Park Royal in North-west London undertook the replacement of some 350 old single glazed units that were set in the mullioned openings to the stone façade of the historic property which was built in 1895.
The company surveyed all of the openings and produced new high performance W30 frames over a nine month period, while maintaining the visual integrity of the elevations. The house's new owners were originally going to replace the fenestration over a longer period, as the refurbishment work inside progressed, but opted to complete the changeover more rapidly when they realized how much they were saving on their heating costs.
Don Northam of NSB comments: "This window replacement contract, going from single glazing to modern double glazed W30 units has made a dramatic reduction in the clients' heating bills while they were pleased that the new steel W30 window retained the character of the building. The couple had been relying on heavy drapes to try and keep the heat in, but soon noticed the difference when we completed the work on the first wing. They took temperature readings throughout the house to confirm the improvement, and decided to go ahead and fit the rest as soon as they could."
The new W30 windows, which were factory finished with a cream polyester powder coat to suit the stonework, typically measured 500 x 900mm high, or 500 x 1200mm high. They contain 18 mm thick IG units with a 4-8-4 make up and Krypton gas filling to achieve a C-rating under the BFRC scheme, making them Part L compliant.
The SWA is continuing to carry out further tests on alternative weather stripping with the intention of gaining the final percentage points to achieve a B rating.
