The Wallwork Group, a national surface engineering specialist serving advanced sectors in the engineering industry, has appointed Mike Jarvis director of engineering. Responsible for the introduction of new technology, energy management and environmental systems he will oversee new development on four UK sites.

“Heat treatment is a core activity for Wallwork, with micro-fine surface coating, bespoke and batch vacuum brazing and the research and development of new processes all making an increasing contribution,” Mike explained. “The technology of surface engineering is advancing constantly and I have been involved in every phase of development. Wallwork proactively invest in new plant and technology to meet the exacting needs of aerospace, motorsport, medical device and other demanding industries.”

Achieving greater energy efficiency and concern to minimise environmental impact are key issues for the company. “I am very proud of the fact that we were one of the first companies in our sector to successfully implement the ISO14001 environmental standard. That was way back in 2008 when energy cost and environmental awareness were not on the agenda for most businesses. Being a pioneer in this field has been a great benefit in achieving higher efficiency in energy use and we have a progressive policy for further reduction to drive competitiveness,” Mike explained.

Mike has spent his entire career at Wallwork. Joining the company in 1990 as an apprentice, he progressed by part-time study at Bury College to become a qualified electrical and mechanical engineer. Promoted to group project engineer he became responsible for the installation of vacuum heat treatment furnaces at three sites. Progressing further, he became chief engineer at the primary location in Bury.

In addition to two sites in Greater Manchester, Wallwork has operations in Cambridge and Birmingham. National coverage is assured by a company fleet of over 40 vehicles giving rapid turnaround of components. Many items are processed and returned to clients within 24 hours because the company operate round the clock.

Mike is currently working on a business studies qualification to broaden his management skills. “This has been  a career journey of 24 years that has been rewarding and challenging. I am looking forward to working with our enthusiastic and forward looking senior management team as we advance the technical frontier of the industry,” Mike concluded.
