UK manufacturing output exceeding expectations
UK manufacturing performance in 2014 is increasing, with a rise of 0.4% reported in January by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), representing a total rise of 3.3% in the manufacturing sector from January 2013 to January 2014. The increase is the most significant since February 2011.

The rubber and plastics industry contributed the most to the growth, increasing by a total of 6.2%. The second highest growth was seen in the machinery and equipment industry, which witnessed a rise of 5.2%.

Lee Hopley, chief economist at EEF said:

“As a number of business surveys have so far suggested, manufacturing entered 2014 with a fair wind behind it with a majority of sub-sectors posting gains on the month.

“While the picture isn’t universally positive, strength seen in sectors from machinery and transport to plastics and non-metallic minerals suggest there are a number of factors driving growth in the sector, including improving investment intentions and a brighter construction outlook.”

While Samuel Tombs, economist at Capital Economics Ltd. said:

“The strength of the recent survey suggests that the recovery in manufacturing output should at least maintain its recent pace in the coming months.

“All in all, then, January’s industrial production figures bring further encouraging signs that the economic recovery is broad based.”

Shrink wrapping machine producer UWrap regularly reacts to breaking news and research related to the manufacturing sector. A spokesperson for the company says that manufacturing, particularly machinery and transport, is showing very positive signs.

“One of the most positive aspects of the gains being made in manufacturing is in the machinery and transport sector. There has been no shortage of positive growth over the course of 2013 and that looks set to continue in 2014 based on initial data and future forecasts, which is good news for us.

“We manufacture and sell shrink wrapping machines, supplying companies all across the UK with our high quality machines, and we’re hopeful that this year will be one of our best on record despite the fact that we’ve been a leader in the industry for decades.”
