Timber framer favours Sterling OSB

Aberdeenshire timber frame and self-build kit specialist, Caledonia Homes, can offer its customers a truly home-grown product. One of its principal raw materials is Sterling OSB, made less than 100 miles away at Norbord's Inverness factory from locally grown timber.

Caledonia Homes offers a wide range of designs including bungalows and two-storey houses all based on the firm's timber frame kits. Customers can opt for a full supply and build service, carried out entirely by Caledonia Homes and its own tradesmen. Alternatively, customers might choose to undertake one or more trades themselves. Caledonia Homes can also quote for simply supplying a kit and erecting it to wind- and water-tightness, leaving all the second-fix and decorating to the customer. Whatever the customer chooses, Caledonia Homes delivers a high quality product incorporating softwood frame, sheathing, flooring and insulation in prefabricated units.

Sterling OSB is used in a variety of roles; as a sarking board for pitched roofs, as a sheathing board for insulated timber frame panels and as a gable panel and as a former for bellcast mouldings.

While Caledonia Homes has traditionally offered a choice of either 9mm plywood or OSB, the company increasingly favours the latter. And there's a clear preference for Norbord's Sterling OSB, says William Thomson, buyer and factory manager for Caledonia Homes:

"Our factory joiners prefer Sterling OSB as it is easier to handle. The edges are cleaner and it's not so easy to get splinters in your hands or fingers with Sterlingboard. Our site joiners also prefer it as the face is not as shiny and slippery as other brands, especially after it has been cut, when sawdust makes a shiny board slippery" continues Mr Thomson.

Caldedonia Homes uses around one pack of Sterling OSB every week. "We buy through our local merchant in full load quantities" says Mr Thomson.
