The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has
this month announced that the typical new car registered in Britain emits no
more than 128.3g/km of CO2, surpassing targets set by the European Union for an
average of 130g/km by 2015.
The current average of 128.3gkm CO2 is 3.6% less than last
year and reflects significant progress made by Britain in tackling harmful
emissions.
The trend is the result of more environmentally cars being
manufactured and a shift in the public consciousness towards economical cars.
But while 2015 targets have been met already, the UK still
has work to do to reach the 2020 target of 95g/km.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes believes that current
figures are encouraging.
“The UK automotive industry should be proud of the progress
it has made in improving the environmental impact of its vehicles. Average new
car CO2 emissions are almost 30% lower than in 2000, boosted by increasing
uptake of the most efficient engine technologies, alternatively-fuelled
vehicles and the new Go Ultra Low campaign.
“Through the Automotive Sector Strategy, it has been hugely
encouraging to see government’s determination to ensure the UK is at the
forefront of research, development and introduction of low carbon vehicles.”
UK Carline, a vehicle leasing company with a large number of
environmentally friendly options available, regularly reacts to industry news,
research and policy. A spokesman for the company argues that leasing has played
a pivotal role in cutting emissions.
“The move towards
more environmentally-friendly cars has been helped immensely by the leasing
industry. The fact is that without leasing there would be far less people
driving new, greener vehicles on British roads, as many people simply cannot
afford to buy said cars outright.
“The affordability of leasing from companies like our own has
made it possible for millions to drive vehicles that don’t cause excessive harm
to the environment.
“At UK Carline we have hundreds of vehicles that utilise
efficient engine technologies and alternative-fuel. If you’re serious about
lowering your carbon footprint but you can’t afford to buy a new
environmentally friendly car outright why not lease one from UK Carline.”
