The UK government recently published a Solar Strategy underlining ambitious plans to effectively convert the country’s roofs into power stations – a strategy which is the first of its kind amongst European governments.

The plan was introduced in detail last week by Greg Barker, Energy Minister, who outlined the government’s ambitious scheme to convert factories, car parks, supermarkets and the government estate into “solar hubs”.

The Solar Strategy, which will see solar rolled out throughout the UK with the potential to also support tens of thousands of new jobs, is the first of its kind in Britain.

Speaking on the plan, Greg Barker, Energy Minister, said:

“We have put ourselves among the world leaders on solar and this ambitious strategy will place us right at the cutting edge.

“There is massive potential to turn our large buildings into power stations and we must seize the opportunity this offers to boost our economy as part of our long term economic plan.

“Solar not only benefits the environment, it will see British job creation and deliver the clean and reliable energy supplies that the country needs at the lowest possible cost to consumers.”

The government intends to take away emphasis from large solar farms and instead place it on growing the solar market for the 250,000 estimated hectares of south-facing commercial rooftops in the country.

Experts and politicians across the UK have commended the government on their environmentally-friendly Solar Strategy.
