Popular online coffee seller, Coffee Compass, has commented on a newly released study suggesting that drinking coffee could decrease the risk of liver cirrhosis
Chronic liver disease is one of the biggest causes of the death in the world, killing hundreds of thousands of people every year, but researchers have recently announced that consuming just two cups of coffee every day could slash the risk of death from liver cirrhosis by a sizeable 66 percent.
The study, which was published in Hepatology, a journal with a focus on liver, pancreas and gallbladder disorders, adds weight to mounting evidence that drinking coffee has considerable health benefits.
The population-based study looked at over 63,000 people between 45 and 74 living in Singapore. Information by participants was given in relation to their lifestyle, medical history and diet. Over the 15 years of the study there were 114 (24 percent) of deaths from liver cirrhosis.
Medical experts discerned that people who drink coffee each day had a significantly lower risk of death from cirrhosis – especially in non-viral hepatitis cases.
Dr Woon-Puay Koh of the National University of Singapore said: “Prior evidence suggests that coffee may reduce liver damage in patients with chronic liver disease. Our study is the first to demonstrate a difference between the effects of coffee on non-viral and viral hepatitis related cirrhosis mortality.
“Our finding suggests that while the benefit of coffee may be less apparent in the Asian population where chronic viral hepatitis B predominates currently, this is expected to change as the incidence of non-viral hepatitis related cirrhosis is expected to increase in these regions, accompany the increasing affluence and westernising lifestyles amongst their younger populations.”
