Construction activity in Q1 of 2014 has been at levels not
seen since 2007, spearheaded by a boost in the number of houses being built
since the start of the year, a construction sector survey shows.
Housebuilding activity saw a rise to 64.2 in March according
to the Markit purchasing managers’ index (PMI), with experts suspecting that
the improving weather played a part in the boost to housebuilding.
Berenberg chief UK economist, Rob Wood, said: “With the
housing market booming and confidence in the economy returning, construction
growth should remain strong through 2014. Housebuilding in particular is rising
fast, driven by surging prices and government subsidies.”
IHS Global Insight chief UK economist, Howard Archer, added:
“What is particularly encouraging and bodes well for the sustainability of the
construction upturn is that the purchasing manager’s survey indicates that the
strength in activity and orders are widespread across sectors.
“Housebuilding activity is leading the way and activity in
March regained upward momentum after slowing in February from a more than
10-year high in January as activity was hindered by the very wet weather and
flooding.”
Leading provider of composite decking Fiberon Decking often
comments on topical news and studies.
A spokesman for the company believes that an increase in houses
being built could bode well for businesses specialising in composite decking.
He said: “In much the same way as house creation has helped the construction
industry, it could also prove a real help for people in the decking industry as
the number of people owning homes and moving houses is on the rise.
“Naturally, when people move into a new house they want to
make it their own and a big part of that is designing and installing a garden
that suits their style – and for many people composite decking is high on the
list of quality materials for their new home.
“Composite is one of the most versatile materials out there
and we stock items in a number of finishes, mimicking the beauty of genuine
wood while side-stepping common problems with natural decking.”
