Following a report from last year highlighting a number of financial investments from finance institutions in extreme farming animal confinement practices in a number of non-EU countries, German agricultural ministers have urged EU countries to put their foot down, calling on International Finance Institutions to meet or exceeded animal welfare laws set by the European Union.

EU Director of Humane Society International, Joanna Swabe, said:

“Using public funds to finance the extreme confinement of farm animals is completely unacceptable and out of line with EU values. It is about time international finance institutions use their funds to improve, not harm, animal welfare. We encourage all EU Member States take a clear position and act.”
