Potholes proving problematic for drivers, study finds
Car and van leasing company UK Carline has reacted to a study which shows majority are unhappy with the condition of British roads

A study conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists shows that the majority of drivers in the UK are ‘very unhappy’ with the state of the roads, prompting calls for the government to do more to tackle the issue of potholes.

According to the study the bulk of British drivers (67 percent) believe that potholes in the United Kingdom are ‘getting out of control’ and that government and councils aren’t investing enough time and money into addressing the issue.

Male drivers were most frustrated by British roads with 69 percent saying that they’re ‘very unhappy’ with them. 65 percent of female drivers were also unhappy.

The study found that there is also little faith in councils, with 34 percent believing that councils are actively cutting what they spend on road maintenance and 60 percent professing that they’re unsure if budgets are genuinely being cut.

Simon Best, IAM chief executive, said: “Despite the government’s pothole review, there is a high level of dissatisfaction with the efforts of authorities to keep our roads safe and smooth to drive or ride on.

“The government need to convince motorists that they have a real cure for the pothole pandemic. This can only be achieved through clear communication on new policies, more sharing of resources, sustained long-term funding and a continued commitment to eradicating the maintenance backlog of crumbling British roads.”

Popular leasing company UK Carline regularly responds to relevant news and research. A spokesperson for the company said: “This study shows that there is still a considerable amount of discontent concerning the standards of British roads.

“With so much anger over the state of our roads government and councils are going to have to come together and do something, whether it’s investing more money in an attempt to solve the problem or being clearer when explaining to the public what’s being done at present to tackle the problem because a lot of the frustration likely comes down to the fact that people don’t know what’s being done in the here and now by councils.

“People are right to be annoyed though as unsafe roads are a danger to drive and cost us all. Hopefully in future most potholes are filled and driving will be a more pleasant and safer experience for everybody.”

UK Carline is a leader in the contract hire sector. The company has been trading for over a decade and has an eye-watering selection of cars and vans available for hire. Visit their website at www.ukcarline.com for more info.
