A report has warned that British energy bills are primed to
increase more than twice as quick as previous government experts expected
because Britons aren’t doing enough to embrace energy efficient technologies.
Ministers believed that that bills would only rise by £64
from 2013 to 2020 but the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a
progressive think-tank who carried out analysis for Global Action Plan, claims
that the frustratingly slow adoption of new green technologies by homeowners
could result in an additional £63 rise in energy bills.
Households sitting on cash and the laboured introduction of
new regulation are predicted to lead to a 40% decline in previously predicted
savings from product efficiency.
IPPR stated that: “Under performance of products policy
means that domestic energy bills could be £63 higher in 2020 than the DECC
currently projects,” adding that there is a “policy black hole”.
Chief executive of Global Action Plan, Trewin Restorick, said:
“Consumers are hit twice when faced with rising energy bills. They’re paying
for unnecessary electricity usage due to energy-inefficient appliances, and
then forking out for ever-increasing subsidies to produce energy that is not
actually needed in the first place. We need to boost the uptake of energy
efficient appliances in the UK. Financial incentives that directly benefit
customers’ pockets are key.”
AC Test, a domestic and commercial electricians company in
Enfield, frequently reacts to energy news and analysis. A spokesman for the company said: “It’s clear
based on the findings of this study as well as our own experiences as a
provider of LED and efficient lighting that the government isn’t doing anywhere
near enough to properly explain the benefits of new technologies.
“We’ve worked with many homeowners and businesses and a lot
of them have expressed shock at just how effective in driving down their energy
costs that our environmentally-friendly lighting and electrical options have
been. They weren’t aware that these technologies were so readily available and efficient.
We’re confident that if more was done to get the word out, homeowners would be
eager to embrace these options and lower their bills over the long term.
“If there is anybody out there who hasn’t had their electrics
tested or updated for a while and is in need of a long term solution to ease
the burden of electrical bills then our team of specialists will be more than
happy to help.”
