The tourism sector in Scotland benefitted from a 10 percent
surge in the number of people visiting Scotland from overseas and a 20 percent
jump in spending, according to statistics.
The figures were released by the Office for National
Statistics and show that there was a considerable rise in the number of
overseas visits to Scotland, going from 2.2 million in 2012 to in excess of 2.4
million 2013.
Data also revealed that spending from overseas visitors had
increased, jumping from £1.4 billion to £1.7 billion from 2012 to 2013.
However, the Great Britain Tourism Survey noted that there had been a 4.9
percent decline in the number of domestic visits.
Mike Cantlay, VisitScotland chairman, said:
“These results point to the success of our international marketing
campaigns such as Meet the Scots and VisitScotland’s partnership with Disney
surrounding the movie Brave.
“Crucial to our success has been attracting more direct
flights than ever before to our airports across Scotland. That ease of access
and improved air connectivity has been key.
“As we move into an action-packed summer for Scotland with
the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and a staggering 830 events under the
Homecoming Programme, Scotland is in a perfect position to exploit tourism as a
key driver of the Scottish economy.”
