Scotland is due a significant tourism boost according to a
report which shows that overseas visitors to Scotland are expanding at a rate that
exceeds the UK average.
The study was undertaken by Barclays who concluded that by
2017 spending in Scotland by tourists will increase by 40 percent, with US
tourists spending expected to trump spending by French and German visitors. The
UK average increase is expected to be 34 percent over the same period.
In all, it’s thought that Scotland will earn £2.3 billion a
year from overseas visitors by 2017. A number which Barclays believes will be
helped by several notable initiatives, including the V&A Museum, the Ryder
Cup and the Commonwealth Games. Visa restrictions were also fingered as being
likely to encourage tourism growth.
Barclays Corporate Banking Scotland managing director, Ally
Scott, said that 2014 will provide unseen growth for Scottish tourism.
“There is no doubt that 2014 will provide an unprecedented
boost for tourism in Scotland but it is welcome news that the afterglow will
continue for the sector in the longer term,” explained Scott. “That is not to
say the industry can rest on its laurels – it is key that this year is used as
a showcase of what Scotland can offer with a view to encouraging visitors back
and that is why legacy has been a core theme.”
Adding that, “Businesses putting in the time and effort to
understand their client demographic and to talk to their audience through
whatever channels they use, be it social media or more traditional, will carve
out an advantage that will enable them to offer something more tailored for
each nationality that visits our shores.”
Wild Horizon Motorhome Hire, an Essex-based provider of
luxury campervan hire, said that the findings don’t come as a surprise to them
as Scotland has long been a favoured destination amongst their clientele for
years.
“Scotland, with its scenic countryside, vibrant history and
friendly people, is one of the best countries in the world to visit and we’re
not shocked in the slightest that Barclays, along with many other experts,
expect something of a tourism boom within the next few years,” said a
spokeswoman for Wild Horizon Motorhome Hire.
“We have a lot of customers who hire campervans and visit
mainland Europe but there is also a huge number of people who drive up to
Scotland to discover the very best that the country has to offer,” explained a
spokeswoman. “To truly experience Scotland in all its glory we definitely
recommend hiring one of our luxury motorhomes.”
