Contactum Extends Aspire Range for Disabled Environments

Contactum has extended its range of Aspire Part M wiring accessories, to improve the living environment of those who are visually impaired or have limited dexterity. The Aspire range now includes a selection of switches, sockets, modular units and media units in a slimline grey rounded profile that comply with current Building Regulations Part M, with distinct white switches for clear visibility, and colour coded terminals on the socket outlets. This is in contrast to the existing white Aspire range.

In designing the range, Contactum ensured that switches, outlets and controls should be easy to operate, be readily visible and be positioned free from obstruction. The design ensures all users should be able to locate a control, know which setting it is on and use it without inadvertently changing its setting.

To avoid inadvertent selection by the visually impaired or those with limited dexterity switches on panels and multiple socket outlets are well separated or in the form of large touch plates.

The objective of Part M is to make it easier for those people with disabilities to use buildings, and the facilities in them, including electrical switches, outlets and controls. The implementation of the requirements of Part M will not only benefit those with physical disabilities, but also but many more; especially the elderly, hard of hearing and visually impaired.

Part M of the Building Regulation is split into 4 requirements and Part M1 lays down that reasonable provision should be made for people with disabilities to have access to and use of building structures and their facilities. How the provisions are interpreted and applied will depend largely upon the building owner's, or specifiers understanding or interpretation of the term disability and its associated implications.

Whilst Contactum offer a range of products to meet the requirements of PART M, the onus on the correct specification of electrical wiring accessories in relation to meeting the regulations, their installation, and position is on the specifiers or contractor.
