Severn Partnership
looks below the surface with new technology
Rail
engineering consultants will benefit from a better view of underground cable
structures after Chartered Geomatics specialist Severn Partnership
expanded its services to introduce an in-house underground tracing system.
The brand
new state-of-the-art tracing technology that Severn Partnership has unveiled
enables the company to carry out below-the-service profiling which will benefit
the rail industry in particular, where on site scanning time is limited. It
will allow engineering consultants to clearly and reliably detect buried
surfaces; including sewers and cables, conducting a number of drainage surveys
and below-the-ground manhole profiling. The system utilises Ground Penetration
Radar (GPR) and radio frequency location detection, to provide customers with
2D and 3D images of underground railway structures.
By expanding
its services in the rail sector, Severn Partnership is now able to provide a
one-stop-shop for customers, collecting consistent high quality data for even
the most complex of site surveys.
Although the
new underground tracing system is still a relatively new service from Severn
Partnership, an extensive training programme has already been devised by the
company to ensure it is effectively implemented across every area of the
business.
Mark White
who is charged with developing the new system and the associated training
programme said: “After speaking to a
number of our customers, it became clear that there was a need for us to
provide an in-house underground tracing service that would complement the existing
services we offer. Typically, rail engineers use topographical scanning to above
the surface sites, but they often also require underground tracing to detect
cables that, if present, may delay work commencing. By introducing our new
underground tracing system we can provide our customers with a specially
tailored service that meets all of their scanning requirements”
As well as benefitting
the rail industry, the underground tracing system will also play a large role
in the construction sector; with GPR technology allowing Severn Partnership to
conduct vital void detection profiling before construction work begins. In turn,
the initial void detection work can aid in planning permission requests, as
well as helping environmental consultancies to detect bore holes.
As with all
of Severn Partnership’s services, data from the underground tracing system can
be integrated into SEEABLE; its sister
company. SEEABLE creates interactive non-technical 3D and Business Information
Modelling (BIM) visualisation APPs for web, desktop, and mobile for safety and
training.
