RS London, a prominent internet marketing company in the South East with expertise in search engine optimisation and pay per click, has responded to reports that British shoppers are the most impulsive in Europe as a result of the popularity of tablets and smartphones
A study on the shopping habits of Europeans has found that shoppers in the UK are much more likely than their continental counterparts to purchase goods on impulse.
The research was conducted by ING, a global financial group, and found that 17 million Britons regularly use their mobile phone to shop, with a staggering 44% of people reporting that they frequently purchase products “on impulse”. Comparatively, only 25% of other shoppers said that they bought on impulse.
Clothing was the most popular purchase for mobile shoppers, followed by electronics, games, holidays and music.
It’s thought that buying something with a tablet or smartphone without physically handing over cash or credit and debit cards leads to people failing to consider the financial ramifications of their purchase.
The study, titled Financial Empowerment in the Digital Age, also found that many believe the internet is making it easier than ever to deal with finances. Around a third of people reported that it helped them to better manage expenses and bills.
Senior economist at ING, Ian Bright, said: “Technology is changing the way that people bank and manage money. Mobile banking is becoming more common across Europe and more people are prepared to pay for things using cashless methods.
“In terms of long-term economic trends, the growth of smartphone use and acceptance of technology is likely to hasten the growth of cashless payments. It is possible that more retailers or venues may not accept cash in the next decade.”
Focusing on the online shopping side of the findings, internet marketing company RS London commented on the results of the study.
A spokesman for the company said: “Working with clients in various industries in the United Kingdom, we’ve often found that in pure conversion terms people visiting online stores with their smartphone or tablet tend to be more likely to purchase a product.”
Adding: “It’s one of the many reasons why businesses in all sectors should be taking the internet seriously. There are millions of people who prefer to buy online and are much more likely to make purchases online.”
